The Big Picture: 65 Million Years of Temperature Swings
If you wonder where today’s temperature fits in with the grand scheme of time on Earth since the dinosaurs were wiped out, here’s the history. We start with the whole 65 million years, then zoom in, and zoom in again to the last 12,000 from both ends of the world. What’s obvious is that in terms of homo sapiens history, things are warm now (because we’re not in an ice age). But, in terms of homo sapiens civilization, things are cooler than usual, and appear to be cooling.

Moreover, the trend of sea level since the 1850s confirms that CO2 has had absolutely no influence on warming that might be on a scale that would influence polar ice caps. The NOAA database is replete with information on that topic. The station at Battery Park at the south tip of Manhattan Island has one of the oldest records in the world of excellent data on C level. It shows absolutely no influence on its train since the 1850s. Other locations around the world are consistent with these data. One only has to watch out for locations where land is rising or falling due to tectonic activity. The data presented here suggest that this trend initiated after the end of the Little Ice Age.
