Our Glaciers are Growing, not Melting – More Falsehoods from Al Gore

By Robert W. Felix

8 Mar 10 – “Almost all of the ice-covered regions of the Earth are melting — and seas are rising,” said Al Gore in an op-ed piece in the New York Times on February 27.

Both parts of Gore’s statement are false.

Never mind that Mr. Gore makes only passing reference to the IPCC’s fraudulent claims that the Himalayan glaciers will all melt by 2035. (“A flawed overestimate,” he explains.)

Never mind that Mr. Gore dismisses the IPCC’s fraudulent claims that the oceans are rising precipitously. (“Partly inaccurate,” he huffs.)

Never mind that Mr. Gore completely ignores the admission by the CRU’s disgraced former director Phil Jones that global temperatures have essentially remained unchanged for the past 15 years.

I’ll let someone else dissect Gore’s lawyering comments, and concentrate on just the one sentence about melting ice, because neither part of that sentence is true.

Contrary to Gore’s assertions, almost all of the ice-covered regions of the Earth are growing, not melting — and the seas are not rising.

Let’s look at the facts.

If you click on the words “are melting” in Gore’s article, you’re taken to a paper by Michael Zemp at the University of Zurich. Mr. Zemp begins his paper by warning that “glaciers around the globe continue to melt at high rates.”

However, if you bother to actually read the paper, you learn that Zemp’s conclusion is based on measurements of “more than 80 glaciers.”

Considering that the Himalayas boast more than 15,000 glaciers, a study of “more than 80 glaciers” hardly seems sufficient to warrant such a catastrophic pronouncement.

Especially when you learn that of those 80 glaciers, several are growing.

Growing. Not melting.

“In Norway, many maritime glaciers were able to gain mass,” Zemp concedes. (“Able to gain mass” means growing.)

In North America, Zemp also concedes, “some positive values were reported from the North Cascade Mountains and the Juneau Ice Field.”  (“Displaying positive values” means growing.)

Remember, we’re still coming out of the last ice age. Ice is supposed to melt as we come out of an ice age. The ice has been melting for 11,000 years. Why should today be any different?
I’m guessing that most Canadians and Northern Europeans are very happy that the ice has been melting.

Unfortunately, that millenniums-long melting trend now appears to be changing. No matter how assiduously Mr. Gore tries to ignore it, almost all of the ice-covered regions of the Earth are now gaining mass. (Or, displaying positive values, if you will.)

For starters, let’s look at those Himalayan glaciers. In a great article, entitled “World misled over Himalayan glacier meltdown,” Jonathan Leake and Chris Hastings show that the IPCC’s fraudulent claims were based on “speculation” and “not supported by any formal research.”

As a matter of fact, many Himalayan glaciers are growing. In a defiant act of political incorrectness, some 230 glaciers in the western Himalayas – including Mount Everest, K2 and Nanga Parbat – are actually growing.

“These are the biggest mid-latitude glaciers in the world,” says John Shroder of the University of Nebraska-Omaha. “And all of them are either holding still, or advancing.”

And get this. Eighty seven of the glaciers have surged forward since the 1960s.

So much for Mr. Gore’s “more than 80 glaciers.”

(I don’t know how many Himalayan glaciers are being monitored, but my guess would be fewer than a thousand, so it’s possible that hundreds more are growing. There aren’t enough glaciologists in the world to monitor them all.)

But we don’t need to look to the Himalayas for growing glaciers. Glaciers are growing in the United States.

Yes, glaciers are growing in the United States.

Look at Washington State. The Nisqually Glacier on Mt. Rainier is growing. The Emmons Glacier on Mt. Rainier is growing. Glaciers on Glacier Peak in northern Washington are growing. And Crater Glacier on Mt. Saint Helens is now larger than it was before the 1980 eruption. (I don’t think all of the glaciers in Washington or Alaska are being monitored either.)

Or look at California. All seven glaciers on California’s Mount Shasta are growing. This includes three-mile-long Whitney glacier, the state’s largest. Three of Mount Shasta’s glaciers have doubled in size since 1950.

Or look at Alaska. Glaciers are growing in Alaska for the first time in 250 years. In May of last year, Alaska’s Hubbard Glacier was advancing at the rate of seven feet (two meters) per day – more than half-a-mile per year. And in Icy Bay, at least three glaciers advanced a third of a mile (one-half kilometer) in one year.

Oh, by the way. The Juneau Icefield, with its “positive values,” covers 1,505 square miles (3,900 sq km) and is the fifth-largest ice field in the Western Hemisphere. Rather interesting to know that Gore’s own source admits that the fifth-largest ice field in the Western Hemisphere is growing, don’t you think?

But this mere handful of growing glaciers is just an anomaly, the erstwhile Mr. Gore would have you believe.

Well, let’s look at a few other countries.

  • Perito Moreno Glacier, the largest glacier in Argentina, is growing.
  • Pio XI Glacier, the largest glacier in Chile, is growing.
  • Glaciers are growing on Mt. Logan, the tallest mountain in Canada.
  • Glaciers are growing on Mt. Blanc, the tallest mountain in France.
  • Glaciers are growing in Norway, says the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
  • And the last time I checked, all 50 glaciers in New Zealand were growing.

But this is nothing. These glaciers are babies when you look at our planet’s largest ice masses, namely, the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.

Contrary to what you may have heard, both of those huge ice sheets are growing.

In 2007, Antarctica set a new record for most ice extent since 1979, says meteorologist Joe D’Aleo. While the Antarctic Peninsula area has warmed in recent years, and ice near it diminished during the summer, the interior of Antarctica has been colder and the ice extent greater.

Antarctic sea ice is also increasing. According to Australian Antarctic Division glaciology program head Ian Allison, sea ice losses in west Antarctica over the past 30 years have been more than offset by increases in the Ross Sea region, just one sector of east Antarctica.

The Antarctic Peninsula, where the ice has been melting, is only about 1/50th the size of east Antarctica, where the ice has been growing. Saying that all of Antarctica is melting is like looking at the climate of Oregon and saying that this applies to the entire United States.

There was not any evidence of significant change in the mass of ice shelves in east Antarctica nor any indication that its ice cap was melting, says Dr. Allison. “The only significant calvings in Antarctica have been in the west.” And he cautioned that calvings of the magnitude seen recently in west Antarctica might not be unusual.

“A paper to be published soon by the British Antarctic Survey in the journal Geophysical Research Letters is expected to confirm that over the past 30 years, the area of sea ice around the continent has expanded.”

What about Greenland?

Greenland’s ice-cap has thickened slightly in recent years despite wide predictions of a thaw triggered by global warming, said a team of scientists in October 2005.

The 3,000-meter (9,842-feet) thick ice-cap is a key concern in debates about climate change because a total melt would raise world sea levels by about 7 meters.

But satellite measurements show that more snow is falling and thickening the ice-cap, especially at high altitudes, according to the report in the journal Science.

The overall ice thickness changes are approximately plus 5 cm (1.9 inches) per year or 54 cm (21.26 inches) over 11 years, according to the experts at Norwegian, Russian and U.S. institutes led by Ola Johannessen at the Mohn Sverdrup center for Global Ocean Studies and Operational Oceanography in Norway.

Not overwhelming growth, certainly, but a far cry from the catastrophic melting that we’ve been lead to believe.

Think about that.

The Antarctic Ice Sheet is almost twice as big as the contiguous United States.

Put the Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets together, and they’re one hundred times bigger than all of the rest of the world’s glaciers combined.

More than 90 percent of the world’s glaciers are growing, in other words, and all we hear about are the ones that are shrinking.

But if so many of the world’s glaciers are growing, how can sea levels remain the same?

They can’t. The sea level models are wrong.

During the last ice age, sea levels stood some 370 feet (100 meters) lower than today. That’s where all of the moisture came from to create those two-mile-high sheets of ice that covered so much of the north.

And just as the ice has been melting for 11,000 years, so too were sea levels rising during those same years.

But the rising has stopped.

Forget those IPCC claims. Sea levels are not rising, says Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner, one-time expert reviewer for the IPCC.

Dr. Mörner, who received his PhD in geology in 1969, is one of the greatest – if not the greatest – sea level experts in the world today. He has worked with sea level problems for 40 years in areas scattered all over the globe.

“There is no change,” says Mörner. “Sea level is not changing in any way.”

“There is absolutely no sea-level rise in Tuvalo,” Mörner insists. “There is no change here, and there is zero sea-level rise in Bangladesh. If anything, sea levels have lowered in Bangladesh.”

“We do not need to fear sea-level rise,” says Mörner. “(But) we should have a fear of those people who fooled us.”

So there you have it. More falsehoods from Al Gore, the multimillionaire businessman who some say is set to become the world’s first carbon billionaire.

Our glaciers are growing, not melting — and the seas are not rising.

I agree with Dr. Mörner, but I’d make it a tad stronger. We should have a fear of those people who have conned us.

The Start of the Carbon Wars in Australia

The Green-Labour coalition has burnt the boats – they have left no room for retreat and we face total carbon war from now on.

Carbon Sunday has jolted Australians into the reality that Bob Brown and his Gaggle of Green Geese, supported by the Three Green Puppets (Windsor, Oakshott and Wilke), now control Australia’s future.

There is no room for any of our basic industries in their Grand Green Goal for Australia. They hate mining, farming, forestry, fishing and the service and heavy industries associated with them. Since the days of the first fleet, these industries have given jobs and security to all Australians. Such security was not earned by singing hymns to Gaia and sitting in the shade.

We few skeptics in the Carbon Sense Coalition have fought the carbon battle for over four years now. A few others such as Ray Evans and a couple of great journalists have battled for longer.

For 3 years no one wanted to know us, but now the seeds planted so persistently are starting to bear fruit. We have not moved at all in our positions but the mountain of public opinion has moved massively towards us. Many thinking and concerned people are now actively in the fight.

The Australian public is now aroused and hostile to the carbon tax. The general media has noticed that we exist and even the ABC has turned its baleful eye upon us.

The main goal of the Greens is to get this tax onto the books, no matter how tattered and ineffective it looks after the storm. Once there, it can be extended and increased.

Our goal is to prevent it getting onto the books IN ANY FORM and making sure all players in the game know that irresistible forces will be working to remove and repeal all trace of this ill considered legislation that manages to become law (that includes all the climate control stuff already on the books).

We now must take the fight to the boardrooms and workplaces of Australia. Every director who spends shareholder funds on the basis that all the climate paraphernalia of taxes, subsidies, exemptions, permits and mandates will continue must be warned and challenged to spell out those risks to investors.

Business and trade union leaders must be challenged by their shareholders, employees, members and customers to demonstrate the soundness of their actions.

So please help us to keep up the fight – spread the word, attend the protest rallies, harass your local politicians and candidates, write to the media, vote “No Carbon Tax” in every poll and support the organisations and parties you believe are opposing this baseless war on carbon and on Australian industry and jobs.

Broncos Ban Skeptics from Entering their Doors

Lord Christopher Monckton is currently touring Australia, speaking on the politics, science and economics of the Great Global Warming Swindle. The Broncos Leagues Club in Brisbane had agreed to book a room for the Brisbane function.

However Green Extremists mounted an organised campaign of protest to the club and the Brave Broncos buckled to the censors.

Would all supporters please advise members and visitors that Broncos Leagues club has a new policy to only admit those who believe in the Man Made Global Warming Fable. We are not sure whether or not visitors will be asked their views before allowing entry. We presume so.

Please advise your friends in case other skeptics are turned away and embarrassed.

Skeptics and Freedom lovers all over the world have been outraged by this action. The letter below is typical. More letters are encouraged.

I truly cannot believe that you have reneged on your agreement to Host Lord Christopher Monckton for a stimulating discussion of climate science, economics and politics. The Broncos, Brisbane and Australia are much the poorer for your having done so.

I have heard Christopher speak on many occasions and have had the good fortune to join him and his delightful, engaging wife Juliet for several dinners and other events. He is a brilliant analyst and a fantastic commentator, speaker and debater, who never fails to bring his audiences to their feet. Unlike Al Gore and certain others, Christopher always responds (politely and directly) to any question he is asked; he never screens questions ahead of time, and absolutely never refuses to take questions. Juliet is as warm, friendly and fascinating a conversationalist as you could hope to find.

Shame on you for having disappointed so many – and having apparently caved in to the dark forces of political correctitude.

I hope you will reconsider your rash decision.

Sincerely,

Paul Driessen

Carbon Tax Mark 3

Australia’s Minister for Controlling the Climate, King Combet, has promised that millions of households will be better off under Carbon Tax Mark 3.

Who is he trying to fool?

There is only one tax on the people and that is total government spending. The carbon tax will increase that greatly. And the more complex the system, with more exemptions, more rebates, more electoral bribes and more cash handouts, the more will be wasted on government administration. We will pay more and get less value back.

Every tax levied by the government gets spread around until it rests with the people at the bottom of the pile. Consumers will see increased costs for electricity food and transport, retirees will see lower dividends, job seekers will see contraction of real jobs, other tax receipts will fall thus reducing government income, and too many of us will spend more time trying to join the ranks of the tax avoiders and rorters.

Can we believe that the same incompetents who delivered pink batts, cash-for-clunkers, schools renewals, a computer for every child and the Queensland Health Payroll will suddenly be able to handle the complexities and con-men in yet another money-churning vote-buying scheme?

None of this will have any effect whatsoever on climate, so why crucify ourselves further?

The world is moving on from the global warming scam.

It’s Time for Australia to move on.

Australian Tour by Lord Christopher Monckton

A well organised group who support the Global Warming Swindle and the Carbon Tax Grab have put pressure on the venues that agreed to host the Monckton Functions. Surprisingly the Broncos League Club in Brisbane has reneged on an agreed function. Already our supporters have let the Broncos know what they think of this breach of contract. Keep it up. But the function will go ahead at:

Bardon Conference Centre

How Green is my Energy

by Geoffrey Luck
June 24, 2011

Take a big deep breath, Bob Brown – savour the 78 parts of nitrogen, 21 of oxygen, and the smidgen of carbon dioxide – and contemplate the folly of your alternative energy ideas. Renewables are not green. That’s the view of one of the pioneers of climate science politics. Jesse Ausubel, Senior Research Associate in The Rockefeller University’s Program for the Human Environment, helped organise the first UN World Climate Conference in Geneva in 1979. He is an avowed ‘deep green’ scientist who believes the essence of being green, and therefore his mantra, is no-new-structures. For years he has been arguing heretical views on energy. In the wake of the Productivity Commission’s scathing comments on renewables, now is the time to listen to him.

Ausubel has a list of heresies that might horrify the true believers in wind and solar power, electric cars and distorting government subsidies:

  • Renewables are not green.
  • The idea of resource exhaustion is irrelevant.
  • Hydrocarbons are not the stored energy of the sun.
  • Little more than 50% of energy will ever be electrified.
  • Nuclear is green, but nuclear plants must make hydrogen as well as electricity.
  • Most surprising of all – decarbonisation has been going on for almost two centuries – without a policy for it.

The New Dark (Green) Age

Last week while driving, I happened to hear part of the farewell speech of Senator Nick Minchin. We will sorely miss people like this stalwart senator. It struck me that this one sad event was like the bell tolling for the new Dark Age to come. In the next few weeks, unless a miracle occurs, and for the first time ever, dark greens and their fellow travellers will gain control of the both houses of parliament in Australia.

No doubt we have won the battle for the minds of the Australian people – every poll shows a strong majority is opposed to the tax on carbon dioxide. And there is growing scepticism for the claim that man causes climate change. But the green elite, who have never won majority support in their own right, are determined to pursue their destructive goals.

Their long-term agenda is to destroy human industry and reduce human population. Thus they are opposed to farming, mining, fishing, forestry, exploration and cheap power.

Their preferred strategy is to divide and conquer. Their tactics are to grab any real concern and magnify and divert it into another reason to destroy or hobble the industries they hate – cattle, sheep, mining, oil and gas, uranium, farming, forestry, fishing and land developers. Their greatest success is achieved when they harness and inflame one industry and use it to ram another – use farmers to destroy the gas industry, use animal lovers and meat workers to destroy live exports, use small business to attack big business, make all industries compete against one another for a dwindling supply of emission permits, get farmers to fight food retailers, cry crocodile tears about the loss of fertile land, and then lock up grazing land in trees, heritage areas and other sterilised ground. And all the time they use their domination of the government media and education empires to spread their half-truths.

BRICS vs PIGS – the Myth that Green Energy will promote Prosperity

We are told that we must embrace “green” renewable energy and impose a carbon tax if we are not to be left behind in the world. Exactly why or how this tax will promote economic growth is a mystery that Garnaut and the Australian government are having difficulty articulating.

But the real world provides some clues to one secret of economic strength.

Looking around the world today it appears there is a direct relationship between the economic decline of those embracing climate alarmism and green technologies and the economic rise of those who do not – the PIGS are failing and the BRICS are rising.

Volcanic Carbon Dioxide

Volcanoes emit enormous volumes of the two main “greenhouse gases” – water vapour and carbon dioxide.

Erupting volcanoes are big news these days. There are over 1500 active volcanoes which are above sea level and many of these show signs of current activity including explosions, lava flows, gaseous emissions and tremors. On average, there are about five eruptions per year that are above sea level.

However, few people realise that there are more than 200,000 known submarine volcanoes, many of which are active. It is reasonable to estimate that there could be a total of 3 million submarine volcanoes.

Carbon dioxide and methane are abundant gases in the earth’s mantle and they are being continually released to the atmosphere. Volcanic carbon dioxide cannot be distinguished from the carbon dioxide produced by burning carbon fuels like coal.

There are very large deposits of methane calthrate on the continental shelf and lakes of frozen carbon dioxide in the deep ocean. Just one new eruption or earthquake can mobilise these into the atmosphere.

We are continually told about the rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but almost all of the world’s carbon dioxide recording stations are beside active volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, Kilauea and Raoul Island. Is the rise merely nature’s breath?

All of this says, we have no idea how much carbon dioxide nature is adding to the atmosphere. The models used to justify the war on carbon start with dream-time forecasts of world economic activity. These figures drive forecasts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which are linked to assumptions and complex formula in a big black box that spits out forecasts of global temperature for a century ahead. No one but an Australian Climate Commissioner could take any notice of these forecasts.

Timothy Casey, an experienced geologist, has produced a well reasoned article entitled Volcanic Carbon Dioxide. It is worth reading at: http://carbon-budget.geologist-1011.net/

The Global Warming Delusion

The truth about greenhouse gases and the dubious science of the climate crusaders.

By William Happer

Will Happer is a physicist at Princeton University. This article appeared in the internet magazine First Things under the title The Truth About Greenhouse Gases.

“The object of the Author in the following pages has been to collect the most remarkable instances of those moral epidemics which have been excited, sometimes by one cause and sometimes by another, and to show how easily the masses have been led astray, and how imitative and gregarious men are, even in their infatuations and crimes,” wrote Charles Mackay in the preface to the first edition of his Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. I want to discuss a contemporary moral epidemic: the notion that increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide, will have disastrous consequences for mankind and for the planet. The “climate crusade” is one characterized by true believers, opportunists, cynics, money-hungry governments, manipulators of various types—even children’s crusades—all based on contested science and dubious claims.

I am a strong supporter of a clean environment. We need to be vigilant to keep our land, air, and waters free of real pollution, particulates, heavy metals, and pathogens, but carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is not one of these pollutants. Carbon is the stuff of life. Our bodies are made of carbon. A normal human exhales around 1 kg of CO2 (the simplest chemically stable molecule of carbon in the earth’s atmosphere) per day. Before the industrial period, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was 270 ppm. At the present time, the concentration is about 390 ppm, 0.039 percent of all atmospheric molecules and less than 1 percent of that in our breath. About fifty million years ago, a brief moment in the long history of life on earth, geological evidence indicates, CO2 levels were several thousand ppm, much higher than now. And life flourished abundantly.

How to Create Carbon Credits – Kill a Camel

The people who brought us pink bats and cash-for-clunkers have a new scheme – we can earn carbon credits by shooting wild camels, humanely of course.

Surely it would be far easier to shoot tame cattle? There are big mobs near all of our northern ports going nowhere.

And if greens have their way and stop all live exports, we can earn heaps more by shooting millions of sheep and goats, humanely of course.

What about those mobs of kangaroos? They burn carbon fuel and emit dreaded carbon dioxide. Why should they be spared when the future of the planet is at stake?

One small problem – what do we do with all those carcasses? Left alone they will release all the carbon sequestered within their bodies within a couple of weeks, thus incurring massive carbon debits.

And who counts the dead camels? To prevent carbon cull fraud the economy will boom with jobs for regulators, inspectors, auditors and prosecutors.

And of course, we must not burn diesel, av-gas or gun powder to do the slaughter, so the hunting must be done from horses using bows and arrows.

And if killing camels earns carbon credits, why can’t cattle, sheep and goat abattoirs also earn them?
